Kintsugi

The metaphor of Kintsugi can be used for the therapeutic work. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pieces of pottery with gold. It is called golden joinery, it highlights imperfections and reconstructs the broken pieces, emphasizing improvement. The repair is illuminated, making the object beautiful, more attractive, and better than before. Reconstructed pieces are a metaphor for strength, beauty and fragility.

This is a helpful metaphor for the therapeutic process. Human beings are also fragile, and throughout life, we experience challenges and difficult times that can break and knock us down, similar to these broken pieces of pottery. The therapeutic process helps to deal with those pieces and to repair and heal what has been damaged and broken. Kintsugi is a good metaphor for redemption, for the healing journey and for living well with whatever happened.
